Mounts and dismounts are some of the most important moments of a session. They are times when participants are adjusting, horses are responding to new cues, and safety depends on everyone working together. Sidewalkers and horse handlers play a key role in keeping these transitions calm, supported, and consistent. By following instructor direction, staying attentive, and using clear communication, volunteers help ensure that every mount and dismount is safe, comfortable, and confidence-building for both the participant and the horse.

The two main types of mounts/dismounts are:

  • Croup Mounts/Dismounts - Where the participant’s leg swings behind them (over the horse’s croup AKA rump)

  • Crest Mounts/Dismounts - Where the participant’s leg swings in front of them them (over the horse’s crest AKA neck)

Role Responsibilities During Mounts + Dismounts

*Mounts and dismounts should never be initiated without instructor/therapist direction
