New Volunteer Checklist

Ready… Set… Volunteer!

We’re so glad you’re interested in volunteering with Hilltop Horizons! Please complete the steps below to begin the process of volunteering. If you have any questions along the way, please feel free to reach out to volunteers@hilltophorizons.org.

  • Complete the New Volunteer Application

    Clearance Information:

Volunteers who are 18 years old or older must complete the following clearances before volunteering:

With the exception of the FBI Criminal Background Check, the clearances can be completed for free online using the links above.

    A Few Notes About Clearances:

    • Complete applications on a computer (not a phone) to avoid technical issues.

    • Clearances typically take up to 14 days to arrive (sometimes faster).

    • You may begin training while waiting, but you cannot schedule your first shift until clearances are received.

    • If you have active clearances dated within the past five years, you may submit those with your Volunteer Application instead of applying for new ones

Please feel free to email volunteers@hilltophorizons.org with any questions you may have and to submit clearances.

  • Complete the Online Volunteer Foundations Training to review all of the “need to know” information for volunteers.

    There are two parts:

    1. Volunteer Foundations - for ALL volunteers

    2. Program Support Volunteers - for those interested in being Sidewalkers and Horse Handlers

You will get credit for completion after you complete the Review Quiz for each part.

  • Let us know when you would like to volunteer! Fill out this Availability Form

  • If you have not yet scheduled an orientation, you can view upcoming dates on our Volunteer Page or email volunteers@hilltophorizons.org to schedule a visit at a different time.

Things to remember for your visit:

    • Please have all paperwork and online trainings complete

    • You do NOT need to have clearances received at this point

    • Wear close toed shoes and dress for the weather

    • Bring a mobile device that can be used to set up and view your volunteer schedule

  • At this point, if you’re feeling comfortable after your on-site observation and your clearances have been received, you’re ready to begin volunteering!

Please note: Additional on-site training is required before serving in the horse handler role. These trainings are listed in Wranglr and are offered on various Tuesday evenings throughout the year, or can be scheduled individually as needed.
